- Years
- 3–6
- Suggested time
- 20 minutes
- Use
- Teacher-led
- Records
- Alias-only, local device
Learning intention
I can decide what a system should and should not keep, and give a reason.
Learning areas: Digital Technologies · Personal and Social capability · Health and Physical Education
Success criteria
- I can name something a system should never keep.
- I can name something it should ask about first.
- I can give one reason for my choice.
Teacher opening
Keep this concrete. Students sort real examples into keep, ask first and never. The point is that someone chose — systems do not decide on their own what to remember.
Systems do not decide by themselves what to remember. A person chose. Today you are that person, and you have to give a reason for what you choose.
Five guided steps
1. Someone chose
- Teacher says / does
- Say: "A system does not decide what to remember. A person chose."
- Student task
- Listen for the word chose.
- Expected outcome
- Students know design is a human decision.
2. Look at the examples
- Teacher says / does
- Read the examples aloud, one at a time.
- Student task
- Listen to each example.
- Expected outcome
- The class has heard every example once.
3. Sort them
- Teacher says / does
- Move to a corner for keep, ask first or never. One example at a time.
- Student task
- Move to your corner. Be ready to say why.
- Expected outcome
- Every student has taken a position.
4. Give a reason
- Teacher says / does
- Take answers to "Who should get to decide what a system remembers about you?"
- Student task
- Say your reason.
- Expected outcome
- Students justify a privacy decision.
5. Stop here
- Teacher says / does
- Say that Session Five is finished.
- Student task
- Remember your rule.
- Expected outcome
- Session Five is recorded on this device.
